He doesn’t come on strong until it matters, but put Mark Sanchez in the playoffs and the kid just wins. In his third season, can the rock-star New York quarterback take the Jets all the way and become the next Joe Namath?

J. R. Moehringer catches up with the future general of Gang Green about his love for Broadway, being a 24-year-old bachelor who has “the means to do anything … But with the wherewithal and understanding and life skills of a 45-year-old Supreme Court judge,” Rex Ryan’s “honesty” with the media, and whether or not he can take his team all the way: “It’s coming,” he says.

See below for some highlights from the interview:

Mark Sanchez on Rex Ryan, after his coach told reporters he might bench Sanchez following a loss to Miami:
“Rex is super honest … I wish he wasn’t that honest at times, especially to say that … I wanted to fight him. I was really mad.”

On when Brian Schottenheimer informed him that Ryan wanted to give extra reps to backup QB Mark Brunell:
“I was like, ‘He can come tell me.” And [Schottenheimer] is like, ‘Come on, man, don’t do that.’”
On feeling a kinship with Broadway performers:
“Their life is so regimented — like mine. They have eight shows a week. They have to take care of their bodies, stretch, eat right, take care of their voices. You know, their voice is like my arm.”

On being a 24-year old bachelor:

“You have to be a 24-year-old bachelor … with the means to do anything, just about, but with the wherewithal and understanding and life skills of a 45-year-old Supreme Court judge.”
