Michael Jackson was the king of many things. The king of pop, the king of the music video, the king of dance – his immense talent knew no bounds, and he reigned supreme for decades in a number of fields. He also broke a number of records, and won countless awards – artist of the decade, artist of the century, etc. – all of which were well deserved. One award show that MJ dominated was the American Music Awards. Year after year he owned that show, with spectacular performances, surprising dates, crazy outfits and powerful speeches. As we look forward to this year’s AMAs, which will see performances from pretty much everyone who matters in pop music right now, we’ve decided to look back at some of Michael Jackson’s greatest and most memorable AMA moments.
MJ performed ‘Good Times’ with his brothers at the 1979 AMAs
MJ cleaned up big time at the 1981 AMAs with his Off The Wall album
MJ cleaned up at the 1984 AMAs, winning a record 7 awards that night, including the Award of Merit
MJ turned heads when he showed up to the AMAs with Brooke Shields and Emmanuel Lewis as his dates. Brooke spoke on her special relationship with MJ in a beautiful speech at his memorial service.
