Earlier this morning, a Moscow judge sentenced three members of the Russian pop band Pussy Riot to two years in prison for hooliganism.

The Pussy Riot case has been one of the most controversial trials of the year.

Back on February 21, the three women— Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevic — were arrested when they performed a surprise performance at Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedra. During the performance, the band sung that they wanted the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Vladimir Putin, the country’s president who was reelected to a third term a couple of weeks after the incident.

The case has seen considerable attention and criticism from the international community. A-listers like Paul McCartney, Madonna and Bjork have publicly been supportive and have demanded that the women be released.

The three women have been already in jail since March, so they already have that time served.

What do you think about this story? Could you ever imagine something like that happening in the U.S.?
