The middle-aged man allegedly stole two DVD players from a Walmart in Lithonia around 1:30 am on Sunday morning. The employees and security guard tried to subdue him in the parking lot until police arrived on the scene, resulting in a physical altercation. Police say that they found the man bleeding from his nose and mouth and that he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The preliminary police investigation also reports that the shoplifter was placed in a chokehold by the security officer.

Police have launched a full investigation to look into the matter. The Walmart employees have been suspended with pay and the security guard no longer works there.

In response, a Walmart spokesperson released a statement:

“No amount of merchandise is worth someone’s life. Associates are trained to disengage from situations that would put themselves or others at risk.”

This goes to show that crime truly doesn’t pay.
