This week is already proving to be a historic one in Washington D.C., starting today when the Supreme Court heard arguments that could strike down California’s ban on same-sex marriage and recognize the right for everyone to be married.

The ruling could potentially extend the right to marry same-sex couples in all fifty states, but Justice Kennedy, a conservative who is viewed as most likely to provide the fifth vote for equality, decided it was premature to decide on a vote.
According to ThinkProgress:
[He] openly pondered whether Prop 8 violates the Constitution’s ban on gender discrimination. Kennedy at one point admitted uncertainty about whether there is sufficient evidence examining the effect of marriage equality on society, but he then pivoted to note that the nearly 40,000 children raised by gay parents in California suffer “immediate legal injury” because of Prop 8.
No decision was made today, but on Wednesday, the court will challenge the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a move that could end the federal government’s practice of denying equal benefits to couples who are legally married under state law.
So, if you can imagine…this is big news! And the supporters of gay marriage (and even some pretty passionate opponents) are out in full-force in Washington D.C. to get their point across.
