Mad Men, the award-winning AMC drama centered around the American advertising industry of the 1960s, finally adds some diversity to the cast. Naturi Naughton has been cast as the first African-American character and makes her debut in episode 10 which will air Sunday, September 26th. Naturi is excited to play this landmark role on the show and we’re sure this will add a significant boost to her acting career.

“I just finished working on [an episode]. It’s a great show and I’m really excited about just having been a part of it. It’s very cool… it’s 1964 or 1965 now [on the show].’ the actress told VIBE magazine.

‘There haven’t been any blacks featured on the show previously because of the times, but now it’s time and here I come… I’m a new character and I can’t really talk about it too much because it’s super hush-hush.”

For clarity, Mad Men, has had few African-American characters in non-speaking background roles as elevator operators or janitors. To the show’s credit, it is a historical-fiction drama which has done a great job of sticking to the script in terms of historical accuracy.

Both Naturi and Mad Men creator, Matthew Weiner, are being tight lipped on the extent of Ms. Naughton’s role. Still, we send our congratulations to Naturi! Remember, you can also catch her in The Lottery Ticket co-starring alongside Bow Wow which hits theaters this Friday.
