Last week I had the honor of being a keynote speaker at the 33rd Annual Big XII Conference on Black Student Government at UT in Austin. The conference is designed to address issues facing African-American students on college campuses, and I was asked to basically tell my life story and speak about conquering your fears.

I am so blessed to do what I love to do, but becoming a solo artist terrified me! At the time all I knew was being in a group situation, so when it came time for me to perform I was like, ‘You want me to do what? I don’t know who told you I’m supposed to go out there by myself!’, but I had to learn to ignore my fears and remember that this was a opportunity that God has blessed me with.

‘Excellence is not a single act. You are what you repeatedly do.’

Someone told me this a few years ago, and I realized that it’s true! If you repeatedly let your fears stop you from of doing something, there’s a good chance you are blocking the blessing that God has for you and you’re limiting yourself from reaching your full potential. When situations I was unfamilar with or not prepared for came up, I could have made the decision to stay in my ‘comfort zone’, but I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am today. Now, I’m not saying it will be easy or that you won’t find yourself nervous in new situations in your life, but after taking that initial step out on faith and ignoring that little voice saying, ‘I don’t think you should this’ or ‘maybe you should wait a little while longer’, you will find yourself doing things you never thought you would do.

So what about you? What are some fears you had and conquered? How did you get over them? Let me know! Talk with you soon!

Love,
LeToya
