Last night I was invited to be a guest judge for the Sound Check showcase at Club Element in Lower East Side. It featured 8 upcoming artists in genres ranging from electro-pop to hard-core hip-hop. But my eye was on a particular artist, who goes by two letters: kg. We will get to him in a few, back to the showcase.Club Element is a beautiful tiny oasis of extreme chic sex appeal. It had what I like to call ‘Barry White lighting’ and a cute mini stage piped in small light bulbs giving off a Broadway essence. The crowd wasn’t huge mostly supporters of the artists really and a few industry come-ups. Dj Llama was spinning a crazy mix of biggie hits, which had me rocking in between the performances. I did a little photo shoot with my fellow judges Newo and Gyvis. By the end of the night my bag was filled with cards posters bios and of course mix tapes.

It was my first time attending one, so being able to be a judge on top of that made it exciting. You know there were those artists who thought they were on Jay Z’s level (they weren’t – AT ALL) and ultra true Beyonce wannabe’s. Then the ones I hate to say but you really didn’t see them making it EVER and the ones that have a great start and just need to perfect their craft. Being there showed me that music is evolving into a newer and greater revolution of individuality.

Kg is definitely in the 3rd category, though I saw last night hip-hop might not welcome him with open arms.  His style is along the lines of Kid Cudi’s flow but with Drake’s depth…its’ really a new sound to the ear. It seemed from the crowd’s reaction that he was speaking in a different language…they wanted sex and streets and kg is more than that. His movement SO MUCH SOUL with upcoming producer Direk is a ‘Revolutionary mind and Evolutionary at Heart’. In simpler words they are forward thinkers who go against the grain while being able to learn from the past and let it pave the way for their future. But I know it will only make him more resilient and respected once he breaks the mold. Though most of his lyrics are about weed, he is very witty and articulate about it. It’s the type of songs you have to listen to 3 times to really get all of the clever the boy has. Thinker’s music that stimulates your mind to recover the soul. This is what music will be; we just have to put our thinking caps on. Why dont you check his sound out for yourself at www.reverbnation.com/kickhead and if you like follow him at @kicksngadgets, and @livendirek on twitter.
