If an artist is only as good as his/her twitter following, then Soulja Boy, Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian are among the most talented individuals of our time. I am fascinated with the general public’s desire to know what celebrities are doing on a daily basis.

There is now a website that enables us to do just that. Twitter allows ‘fans’ to get direct access to celebrities and can also be used as an effective marketing tool. As a twitter user, I can’t help but notice the constant retweets and suggestions on who I should follow.

When I click on these pages I notice that some these celebrities have millions of followers when artists that I deem more talented do not have half as many people interested in their daily activities. For example, the twitter followers of talented singers Algebra BlessettCorey Latif Williams, and Tank combined do not add up to the amount of followers that any of the aforementioned celebrities have.

I wonder why this is so. I started to think that perhaps my taste in music is simply not mainstream enough. But then again Algebra, Latif and Tank are amazing. Why are they slept on via twitter? These are just a few of examples of individuals that are extremely talented yet have a small twitter following. I’m sorry but there is no reason why Kat Stacks should have more followers than people who actually have talent. Is it that the public likes controversy? Could it be that the more commercial an artist is, the more interested people will be in following him/her? To

answer the question posed, I am unsure if an artist’s success is shown by simply analyzing their number of twitter followers. However, I do see that well established musicians, Common for example, do not have the same twitter appeal as Soulja Boy and I wonder why. Both of these men can be deemed successful so I am left pondering. What are your thoughts? Why do you think some artists attract a larger following?
