White House press secretary Robert Gibbs stepped down on Wednesday to become a political consultant to the President as he prepares up for re-election.

Gibbs was known to be a relatively blunt guy and even caught some flak after telling The Hill newspaper that people on the ‘professional Left’ were ignoring Obama’s accomplishments, and wouldn’t be satisfied until ‘we have Canadian health care and we’ve eliminated the Pentagon. That’s not reality.’ Some people in the administration thought he should have resigned after the comment but he firmly told them he wasn’t going anywhere.

Obama has made his feelings about Gibbs very clear:

‘For the last six years, Robert has been a close friend, one of my closest advisers and an effective advocate from the podium for what this administration has been doing to move America forward. I think it’s natural for him to want to step back, reflect and retool. That brings up some challenges and opportunities for the White House…’

Opportunities like hiring a celebrity to replace Gibbs?! The primary responsibility of a press secretary is to act as spokesperson for the government administration. His successor will be announced in two weeks and we’ve got a list of some good candidates.
