D.C. based rapper Tabi Bonney finds inspiration everywhere. He’s just released the music video for the sexy and haunting ‘Where We Gonna Go’ featuring Swedish songstress Lykke Li and seamlessly blends his hip-hop beats with electronic pop and emotional vocals.
The video features Tabi and a scantily clad beauty chilling at home and enjoying each other’s company, while the song’s electronic beats slink underneath Tabi’s languid rhymes and the atmospheric Lykke Li sample. GlobalGrind had a chance to speak to Tabi about his influences, being from D.C. and the progress on his new album.
‘I’m a fan of her music,’ he said about using the Lykke Li track, ‘In hip-hop you just take songs and make them your own. DJ Smiles Davis from LA took the song, flipped it a little and I just did my thing to it.’
Tabi also said his U.S. home shapes his music: ‘DC is a transient city and it’s pretty much like the capital of the U.S. You have so many different cultures and world views here. If anything it’s just given me an open mind and a worldly view on everything. If you go deeper, DC has been about gogo music. but it’s always been vast from Marvin Gaye to Duke Ellington. It’s a melting pot, it’s helped mold me for sure.’
Tabi sites Kanye West, Jay-Z, Mos Def, Bjork, Portishead, Bob Marley and Santigold as some of his influences and is also getting ready to head out on the ‘Road to Paid Dues Tour’ with Murs, AB-Soul, Whole Wheat Bread, kicking off next week in San Diego.
Tabi is also ‘70% done’ recording material with Ski Beatz (Jay-Z’s ‘Reasonable Doubts’) for his upcoming full length album, he’s shooting for a beginning of summer release date.
