After last week’s estimate that the red leather jacket that Michael Jackson wore in “Thriller” would only auction for about $200,000- $400,000, an avid car collector from Texas named named Milton Verret surprised many and dropped a cool $1.8 Million on the jacket this past Sunday at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills.

We knew the jacket was going to go for much more than they estimated, but exactly how much was the real question.

The jacket, designed by Deborah Landis, the wife of “Thriller” director John Landis, is one of two Jackson wore during the filming of the 1983 “Thriller” video. The other one, in scuffed condition, is owned by the Jackson estate.

The auction winner, Milton Verrett, is a self proclamed fan of hot rods, Corvettes, and other popular sports cars. Milton is also a philanthropist and is involved in multiple charitable efforts, including a past purchase of a bike owned by Jay Leno that was later used to benefit a New York Based Charity.

He has different plans for the famous “Thriller” jacket, it  will be put on display at Dell Children’s Hospital in Austin, before sending it around the world to display during as a fundraising tool for children’s charities.
We’re glad that he has chosen to use the jacket for charity, we know Michael would have liked it that way.
