Kanye West is the king of G.O.O.D. music, literally and figuratively.
Kanye’s been in the music business for some time now, but he initially got his big break producing tracks for one of hip-hop’s then hottest music labels, Roc-a-fella. If you ever wondered who produced some of Jay-Z’s hottest songs, then Mr. West is the man you should be looking at.
Kanye has a bad rap for being arrogant, outspoken, self-centered and being a downright douchebag at times, but damnit, the guy makes amazing music. Not only does Kanye have the ear for amazing music, but he also has the eye for talent.
Kanye started up his label G.O.O.D. music back in 2004 and the first artists he rounded up were respected rapper Common and singer John Legend. Since then, Kanye has signed a powerhouse full of hip-hop stars and some stars that aren’t so hip-hop.
In three years, Kanye began to slowly but surely build his team of G.O.O.D. artists. Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Pusha T, Cyhi Da Prynce, Mr. Hudson, D’Banj, and folk group Bon Iver are all a part of the G.O.O.D. music clan. All of the artists may not be blazing over the radio waves at this time, but most of them are dope consistent artists, some of which have been in the game for years.
When most people think of today’s best hip-hop labels, many people jump to give Lil Wayne’s Young Money army all the credit, but once you start breaking down Young Money, only three seem to have longevity on their side. Those three are obviously Nicki Minaj, Drake, and kind of, sort of Tyga.
Young Money has amazing artists on the label, but there’s just something about the quality of Kanye’s G.O.O.D. music that trumps Young Money’s army.
Rapper Big Sean is finally famous and with hits like “I Do It,” and “Marvin Gaye & Chardonnay,” it’s only a matter of time before he’s selling out arenas. Folk group Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon is responsible for most of the hooks you love on Kanye’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” and has a diverse loyal fan base that’s been established for a considerable amount of time. Pusha T has scored hip-hop success with his brother Malice in the group Clipse, but is now playing solo. Pusha is a monster, lyrically, and with Cyhi da Prynce’s lyrical style and wittiness, he too, will be the new craze in hip-hop. Not to mention the workings of Kid Cudi, John Legend and Common.
Basically, Kanye has artists of consistency and good old fashioned talent, which is why I’m saying that G.O.O.D. music is working on becoming the best hip-hop label in the game.
Hip-hop labels come and go and with G.O.O.D. music inking a deal with Island Def Jam to be their official distributor, it’s straight to the stars for Kanye and friends.
