Derek Jeter, famed New York Yankees shortstop, has finally joined MLB’s exclusive 3,000 hit club. Jeter, who is also the team’s captain, will join a legacy of great New York prime time players.

The captain has risen to iconic status now more than ever before! DJ, as he’s now known in the Big Apple, has cemented his name in the streets of New York forever.

So where does Jeter rank when it comes to New York City icons? Right at the top.

Now, New York has bred some of the most creative and talanted people in the world, so we had to narrow down our list a lil bit. Some on our list were born in NYC and others made their claim to fame there.

One thing is for certain, they will all be remembered for their contribution to the Empire State.

From Jay-Z to Frank Sinatra, here are some of New York’s prime time players.

Hova, Hova, Hova:

Jay-Z, the Marcy rapper who put Brooklyn on the map with his “Empire State of Mind.” With Beyonce on his side, Hova got the hottest chick in the game wearing his chain. It only makes sense since he’s a New Yorker.

Spike:

Spike Lee, the man who told us to “Do The Right Thing,” can be found every once in awhile at a Knicks game rooting from the sideline for his boys in blue and orange. Not only does Spike represent for Fort Greene, Brooklyn he represents for all of NYC through his films!

P DiddyBad Boy founder and music mogul, put Harlem on the map by taking balling to another level. Diddy said in 1997, “10 years from now we’ll still be on top” and he sure was right!

The Motherfu*ker With The Comedy:

Chris Rock, don’t kill this messenger, he’s too funny. Plus Chris Rock is from Crown Heights, Brooklyn so he gets a “hood pass.”

Lady Gaga, an Upper West Side, Manhattan native with 20 million Twitter followers, has enough fans to start her own town!

Mimi:

Mariah Carey will have you wanting to touch her body. This ageless beauty with her high-pitched voice is definitely an asset to the Big Apple. Growing up not too far from the city in Huntington, Long Island, we’re more than happy to call her a New Yorker.

The Beatle:

John Lennon, if you don’t know who this guy is, you’re crazy! As an original Beatles member, Lennon made the Big Apple famous by sporting his “New York City” t-shirt.

Bobby D:

Robert De Niro, is the guy everyone always wants to say “You talkin’ to me?” De Niro grew up right here in NYC. He was able to easily transform into the characters he played based on his childhood spent in the Little Italy neighborhood of Manhattan.

Mr. Training Day:

Denzel Washington, aka “King Kong ain’t got nothing on me!” definitely know’s what it is to have a New York swag. Denzel was born and raised in Mount Vernon, NY and he’s as New York as it gets.

The Godfather Of Hip-Hop:

Russell Simmons knows exactly what it is to be a New Yorker. Growing up in Queens with working-class parents, he has risen to the top as a co-founder of hip-hop label Def Jam. Not to mention he’s the founder of the one and only GlobalGrind.

Old Blue Eyes:

Frank Sinatra, aka “The Chair Man of the Board,” was born in Hoboken, NJ but spent most of his career in the Empire State. Sinatra is a classic New Yorker and is remembered by his age old song “New York, New York.”
