Weight: $0.00

How They Hustled: Edgar Galvis, a 51-year-old Ground Zero clean-up worker with throat cancer has received an astonishing compensation check for zero dollars.

Galvis had been expecting $10,005 from a court settlement with Merrill Lynch, awarded for illnesses he contracted after spending six months removing toxic debris from their offices next to the World Trade Center site.

But instead he was devastated to find his lawyers had taken such a huge slice of his settlement he was left with a check for exactly $0.00.

What Happened: Blood clot victim Chris Staniforth, 20, died after spending up to 12 hours at a time playing on his Xbox.

The gaming enthusiast suffered a blockage to his lungs when he developed deep vein thrombosis – commonly associated with passengers on long haul flights where they are relatively immobile for hours on end.

Plot Line: A firebrand educator with ties to a white supremacist group is running a Bronx Catholic school where most of the students are Black and Latino, the Daily News has learned.

Frank Borzellieri, 48, was quietly promoted to principal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School two years ago – despite a history of controversial writings and campaigns, including a push to ban a biography on the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Who: Earnest Nash

What Happened: The mayor of an Arkansas city claims to have been pistol whipped following a heated discussion with council members, it has been reported. 

Earnest Nash, mayor of Gould, described the incident on Thursday evening as the culmination of months of abuse aimed at him and his family. 

A witness said Mr. Nash had been talking to council members Sonya Farley and Rosieanna Smith in a car when a member of the public joined in the heated discussion.

Hero of the Day

Who: Kirra Goddard 

What Happened?: 13-year-old Kirra Goddard was crushed to death when an SUV driven by a man who had been stabbed flipped over and landed on top of her. Kirra Goddard, of Brooklyn, New York, died after pushing six other kids out of the path of the out-of-control SUV. 

Her family hailed her as a hero who was always helping others.

What Happened: On this day in 1981, MTV: Music Television goes on the air for the first time ever, with the words (spoken by one of MTV’s creators, John Lack): “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star” was the first music video to air on the new cable television channel, which initially was available only to households in parts of New Jersey.
