The Annie E. Casey Foundation, a non-profit foundation, who surveys the well-being of children families across the United States, has found that child poverty has increased in 38 states from 2000 to 2009. As a result, 14.7 million children, 20 percent, were poor in 2009.

For Instance, in Mississippi, 31 percent of children were living in poverty the highest level in the U.S. The Foundation based their findings on 10 key aspects from health to social and economic factors.

Geography also plays a role when it comes to child poverty; the data shows that states in the Northeast and Midwest are better off, while southern states fared badly.
