Iggy Azalea: “I Get Compared To Kreayshawn…It’s Annoying”

    Comments:  | Leave A Comment

Australian-born rapper Iggy Azalea has the whole internet talking about her “Pu$$Y” and she’s certainly happy about it.

Iggy is probably one of the most interesting new rappers in the game. Hailing all the way from down under, Iggy is a self-proclaimed “weirdo,” who is a co-owner of a weave company, yes, a weave company, and named herself after her paralyzed and now dead dog.

Don’t get Iggy twisted, she’s far from “Gucci Gucci” rapper Kreayshawn, and absolutely hates it when people compare her because she’s white.

    NEW VIDEO: Iggy Azalea “Pu$$Y”

Her government name is Amethyst and she started rapping at 14. After moving across the world by herself at 16, Iggy is planning on taking over the rap game one song at a time.

GlobalGrind caught up with the hilarious rapper and she had lots to say about her musical inspirations, her celebrity crushes and of course, her dope music.

Her mixtape Ignorant Art drops tomorrow on her site IggyAzalea.com

Check out her exclusive interview below!

    When did you start rapping?

I started rapping since like 14. But I’ve been obsessed with rap from when I was 11. I heard “Baby Don’t Cry,” I’ll never forget. I was at my next door neighbor’s house, who was this group of boys and they were older than me. You know there’s always that one cool kid who knows all the good music sh*t? They were my next door neighbors and I went over one day and they had this eclectic mix of music. I was like, ‘WOAH.’ I was sickly obsessed. I had every picture of Tupac ever printed on my wall.

How did you come up with the name Iggy Azaela?

It was my dog’s name growing up. That’s weird, right? My dead dog. He was the coolest. He was half pit and half Australian cattle dog. My dad got him when I was a baby. I had him my whole life growing up and he was this crazy dog. He would fight all the dogs in the neighborhood. My next door neighbor, they were breeders, and he f*cked their girl dog and when it had babies, their little babies came out and they were the wrong color. And they hated our guts after that. They wanted him dead. He would bite people, have fights with other dogs, he got bitten by a snake so he was paralyzed, we took him to the vet, I thought he was going to die. He never died! We had to get him put down when I was 18 because his legs stopped working, but this motherf**ker would not let go. He was the coolest.

    What’s your real name?

My real name is Amethyst. It sounds like a stage name. My mom is kind of crazy.

    How old are you?

    I’m 21.

    [pagebreak]

What’s the name of your mixtape?

It’s called Ignorant Art. It’s based off  Basquiat, an artist from the ’90s. He was a street artist. A lot of people didn’t understand and be like, ‘that’s not art.’ I kind of based the concept off that. Some sh*t on the mixtape is quote-unquote “ignorant.” So I’m really quote-unquote “odd.”

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

Andre 3000. Tupac too. I just want to talk about Andre because everybody knows I’m obsessed with Tupac and we all know why he’s great. But I love Andre! He’s f**king cool to me. Aquemini, man that was my sh*t! For real. That’s my favorite Outkast album. I just love Andre because I just loved how he never dressed like a rapper is supposed to and when they had Speakerboxxx and he was singing, I was like, ‘damn, he’s really pushing the borders on what a rapper’s supposed to be.’ I love Andre 3000, man. He’s the coolest. I want to meet him so bad.

    [pagebreak]

We’ll put it out there that you want to meet him.

Yeah, I’ll put it into the universe. I swear everybody’s met him but me. I used to live in Atlanta like, ‘Where is he? I see Big Boi everywhere. Where’s Andre?’ And everybody’s like ‘You’ve never met him? I just saw him the other day at this café.’ I was a stalker of Andre 3000. He’s the coolest. I would fall out of the front row in church if I saw him. That’s the only person. I can’t even deny. He’s f**king cool.

You’re from Australia, but you’re currently living in Los Angeles. When was the last time you visited Australia?

Last week, actually. But I was only back there for three days because I’m still filling out the information for the immigration stuff. I moved out here right before I turned 16 in 2006 and I’ve lived here and every three months I go back home and turn around and come straight back to America so that they [Immigration] can’t catch me. It’s kind of like a loophole thing. I didn’t graduate high school and so there’s really no way when you don’t do that to want to go to college or any of that.

Did you drop out of high school?

Yeah I dropped out. It was weird. I hated school so bad. I only liked art class during high school. I was always smart. It’s just that coming from such a small school and then going to public school is kind of like, they don’t really give a f*ck if you do good or not. I went to the worst school in my area. I kept sneaking off to work to save up to get this ticket to America. Nobody here really likes hip-hop and I wanted to be a rapper, so I thought ‘If I’m going to do this, I have to go to America.’  Because otherwise, it’s not going to happen. I want to be really authentic. It would have been just me from a culture that I’ve never been in.

I told my mom I’m going on a holiday. She knew I was pressed because I felt like I was so isolated. So she was like, ‘OK, I’ll let you go on this holiday.’ She cried the day that I left and she was like, ‘Please be safe. If anything happens to you, everybody will say I’m a bad mom.’ When I got here, I went to Miami and it was the best thing ever and I called my mother and told her that I’m not coming home.

How do you feel about people comparing you to Kreayshawn?

I think it sucks because I just feel like there are so many other artists that you could say I rap like, like Shawna. I can see that more, than saying I spit like Kreayshawn. We don’t have the same cadence. To me it’s like, ‘OK, that sucks because music isn’t supposed to be about race or color.’ I have a vagina and I have white skin so I get compared to Kreayshawn and that’s what annoys me about it.

    What’s your favorite color?

I love purple because my name is Amethyst.

    What’s your favorite food?

Crepes, I like banana and maple syrup dessert crepes. I’m obsessed with crepes. I want to know how to make them. My dad bought me a crepe maker for my birthday. I love them.

    Who’s your favorite person?

Tupac, even though he’s dead. He still exists. I know so many cool people. Who do I love? I love my dad. He’s pretty crazy. He has a banana plantation and he draws cartoons. I love him. He’s like the coolest, understanding person ever.

If you were sent to a deserted island and you could only bring 3 albums with you, what 3 albums would you bring?

Nas, Tupac & Outlaws Still I Rise, and I would take a Missy album just because she’s a female rapper and she’s f**king cool and I love her videos.

    [pagebreak]

Do you have any celebrity crushes?

I’m not going to say who it is because I don’t want to out them. When you really think about it, there are not many cute boys in the industry. There are boys with swag, but a cute one? I don’t know.

Who’s the most swagged out rapper?

Asap Rocky. He’s the most swagged out. He’s fucking cool. I’m obsessed with him. His videos are dope as f**k.

Anything else you want your fans to know?

I got 1990 with YG coming out. I love them. They’re like my brothers.

    When will that be finished?

I’m hoping December or Christmastime. We start in a week and I’m thinking a month for us to record it and figure out a business plan for it. They like to just put sh*t out because they love music so much, they don’t think about the business side of it. They just record a billion songs and give them out. I work less and think about what I do and try to strategically do it. So it’s going be cool.
