Yesterday Twitter was going crazy over Apple’s release of iOS 5, the newest operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad. Demand was so great in fact, that Apple could not support the rush of downloaders and Apple’s servers crashed!

Since things are now much more stable on Apple’s end (too many people, too few servers), we wanted to get you the 411 on how to add the new iOS to your device. If you are asking, “Why does this matter? My iPhone/iPod/iPad works just fine” you should know that the new operating system comes with “Cloud” storage, which is an absolute game changer.

Here are a few highlights of the new iOS:

  • iCloud: Backs up everything so you can stop hiding floppy disks around your room.
  • iMessage: Goodbye text messaging. Introducing free messaging between iPhone users.
  • Reminders: Sends you reminders based on where you are and what you need to do.
  • Twitter Integration: Twitter everywhere. ‘nuff said.
  • Better Camera: New, simpler way to take photos.
  • Photo Editing: Better tools (cropping, changing, playing with) to send your twitpics.

Sound good? We thought so. Here’s how you get this shiny new set of tools in the palm of your hand:

    • 1. Make sure you’ve got the newest version of iTunes. Click here to get it.
    • 2. Connect your device to your computer — it will automatically serve you a prompt and ask you to download the new iOS.
    • 3. Once the download completes, turn on the device and follow the instructions on the screen.
    • —Be sure you “enable location-services.” This will let your phone know where you are and give you smarter recommendations.
    • —Join a Wi-Fi network. It doesn’t matter if the network you join isn’t your favorite or home network, you just need this turned on to get everything synced.
    • —Enter your Apple ID. This is the same ID they asked you for when you downloaded iTunes.
    • —Give it your birthday. Sucks, but Apple is asking and they’re the overlords.

Now that your basics are set-up, Apple will show you the 200+ new updates. Choose what you want and make it rain!
