Halloween is that magical time of the year where you can let loose and have all the adult fun and entertainment you were deprived of as a kid.

It’s that time of year where you can OD on sugar and alcohol, which is turned into sugar anyway, so it’s a win-win all around!

Halloween is also that time of year when people lose their minds and think they can get away with appropriating someone’s culture by way of make up and costumes. You know what we mean: wearing black face, red face, yellow face and brown face.

Then there are those folks who are six feet tall and dress up as a Smurf, those who are overweight and dress as a mermaid complete with tail, and other people who dress like R2D2 while standing over four feet tall.

No matter what your drinking buddy from Calc 102 tells you, those costumes are not cool!

In short, it’s OK to paint your face green and go as the Hulk or She Hulk. Those two are not real, they’re made up. It’s NOT OK to paint your skin black, brown or red, because it’s offensive and there are real living people out there with real living problems.

Being black, brown, red and yellow isn’t as easy as applying make-up, despite what the Wayans Brothers and Tracy Ulman tells you.

If you want to go as a person of color for Halloween, we suggest you leave the paint and shoe polish at home and say you’re going as (Fill in Name Here) while they’re summering in Iceland, because folks of color do lose their color in cold climates.

Do you think it’s appropriate to appropriate another culture for Halloween and have you ever done so?
