The collective hacker group known to the world as Anonymous is fighting the biggest fight they’ve faced thus far.

Anonymous is going after the Mexican Cartels, now after one of their own has been kidnapped.

The group warned Mexico’s most notorious Cartel, the Zetas, that they would reveal the names of people who had aided the cartel, including taxi drivers, police officers and journalists, if their Anonymous brother isn’t released.

In a YouTube video, an Anonymous hacker dawning the popular Guy Fawkes mask said:

“We are tired of the criminal group the Zetas, which is dedicated to kidnapping, stealing and extortion and they’ve made a great mistake carrying out an abduction of one of their members in Veracruz.”

The messenger added:

“We cannot defend ourselves with weapons, but we can with their cars, houses and bars. It’s not difficult. We know who they are and where they are.”

Anonymous tends to make good on their promises. They have collectively taken down the websites of Visa, MasterCard, PayPal and Bank of America just to name a few, but going after a Mexican Drug Cartel is a different battle.

The Zetas are one of the most violent cartels in Mexico and are responsible for 40,000 deaths since 2006. Earlier this year the bodies of a man and woman were found hanging from a bridge in the northern Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo and attached to them were signs that read:

“This is going to happen to all of those posting funny things on the internet.”

This is a grimy and scary underworld battle and neither Anonymous nor the Zetas are backing down.

Take a look at a quick gallery of promises kept by Anonymous.
