Reggae dancehall artist Sean Paul took the music industry by storm in 2002 with his album Dutty Rock.

Now, some 10 years later he’s still making magic with new music. Sean Paul linked up with StarRoc/Roc Nation songstress Alexis Jordan on his new dance track “Got 2 Luv U.”

GlobalGrind caught up with the dancehall artist to talk about his forthcoming album, his celebrity crushes, and growing up in Jamaica.

Check out our exclusive interview below!

GlobalGrind: “Got 2 Luv U”is dope! What made you want to link up with Alexis Jordan?

Sean Paul: Basically, I wanted to work with Stargate, and they signed her. When I first heard the song, it was a demo of someone else singing the hook. I thought ‘We need a girl to sing it’ and we got the perfect girl. She’s beautiful, she sounds great, she came in second on America’s Got Talent, she came first on Britain’s Got Talent. She’s been selling records in Europe and Australia. This is her home.

You’re working on your upcoming album. Is it finished?

It’s almost finished.

Can we get some secrets, names, or dates?

I worked more with Stargate. I wrote two songs with Stargate. The first one features Alexis Jordan. That’s the one that’s out now. I got another song with Kelly Rowland.

One or two more joints in October, then do mixing, then we’re done. So I got a good amount of work.

Your fans have been wondering when you’re going to drop your album.

It’s gonna come out in February.

Do you have a name in mind?

No. I don’t have a name.

How does it usually come to you?

When I finish all my songs and I’m sitting there listening to them. I don’t want to call it something before because I might be writing songs and I’ll feel a different way the next day. Some songs just don’t match the name on top.

Who are your favorite dancehall artists that are coming out right now that you think people should really listen to?

Some of them I produced, like I started with Charlie Black. People like Busy Signal are very hot. Agent Sasco who used to be known as Assassin.

Who are a few of your musical inspirations?

Definitely people like Super Cat, Bob Marley. They gave the highway I’m able to drive right now. People like Bob Marley, people like Shabba Ranks, Super Cat. I was musically influenced by enough different things, The Beatles, people like Nirvana. I check out different types of music, I express myself with mainly dancehall reggae, and people like Biggie, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, those are enough musical influences right there.

If you could collaborate with anybody, your dream collaboration, who would you work with?

Alicia Keys and Shakira. When I do songs with ladies, it turns out the best that way. Alicia Keys and Shakira, I’ve been looking towards them for awhile. You hear Alicia Keys’ soul when she sings and I love that. Shakira has a whole package as an entertainer and I love it.

What’s your favorite color?

Green.

What’s your favorite liquor?

Hennessey. I usually drink it straight up. Sometimes I ice it down.

What’s your favorite food?

I think Asian type food. I like the vegetables. It’s always tasty. But my favorite breakfast in the world – ackee and saltfish. I don’t understand what’s wrong with American people. They think ‘What is that? Is that eggs?’

If you were sent to a deserted island, what three albums would you bring with you?

That’s a crazy question. If I was on a deserted island, my CD batteries would run out. But, it’s hard. I can’t even answer you because there’s an album with four CDs in it.  Bob Marley album…Probably The Beatles’ Number Ones album. That’s a cool album. So that’s Bob, that’s them, and one of Biggie’s first albums. Ready To Die

Do you have any celebrity crushes?

Scarlett Johansson. Scarlett is a brilliant actress and she’s also hot.

What’s something you can’t live without?

I guess my phone.

What was the best part about growing up in Jamaica?

The weather. I took it for granted at first. Believe me, to this day, every time I come to New York, if back here is cold and back there is cold, it’s freezing.

Where are you stationed right now?

In Jamaica.

You’re the hometown hero, right?

Everybody in Jamaica is doing their thing. And I’ve been in Jamaica since 1996. So they’re used to me now. It’s not that small, but it’s like me and Usain Bolt. West Indians know how to party. Rihanna was in Barbados and she was getting it poppin’ down there. And everybody was stunned. I thought ‘Are you serious? That’s how they do it. There’s no other way.’

Do you have anything else you want to say to your fans?

The album’s coming out in February, with the single. My Twitter @duttypaul. I wasn’t really into that social media sh*t. I don’t like Facebook or MySpace. Twitter to me is fast and has a lot more pictures and video and blogs. It’s not about who did this and who did that. It’s just about what’s on a person’s mind.
