GlobalGrind caught up with the vibrant singer to talk about his passion for music, his odd celebrity crush on Oprah and of course, all the ladies who get him in trouble.

Check out our exclusive interview below!

GlobalGrind: What was your inspiration behind “Trouble”? We know girls can get you in trouble.

Bei Maejor: They can. It’s like a warning. If you keep doing whatever it is that you’re doing, it could cause you to get in trouble. I’m not necessarily saying not to do it, but I’m just letting you know what the consequences will be. So creating that, that was the vibe of it.

I feel like “Trouble” is the first song of the style I made up. I call it up-scale, my up-scale sound. I feel like you might be riding out in a car, and the company name might be General Motors or something. But it’s like a Cadillac Escalade. It got a little leather, a little wood grain. And you feelin’ fly in it. But it’s still kind of hood too. You could be in the hood or you might see a white lady driving it with rims on it listening to rap. That style is up-scale and sleek. It’s still a little hood, but it ain’t old school on 24s. It’s different. So I call it upscale.

I feel like “Trouble” is the first one that uses that sound. It sounds a little expensive. I was really happy to discover that sound. At first, I didn’t even know if it would make it to radio because it is something that sounds different. I was excited about that. I made it, co-wrote it, Cole jumped on it, and we’ve been cool ever since.

Has a girl ever gotten you in trouble?

What’s trouble to you?

[pagebreak]

It depends on how you interpret it. You could have gotten caught up with another girl, could’ve gotten in trouble with your mother if you were hiding her in the house when you weren’t supposed to…

Yeah, when I was in high school I got in trouble with my mom. I didn’t even know that she was coming home. I got in a little bit of trouble, but I survived. I don’t know how I made it through.

Do you play any other instruments aside from the piano?

No, not really. I play stuff just from listening. That’s even how I play piano – just from listening. I don’t know how to read it.

How old were you when you first started making music?

I was about 16 when I first started producing. I took producing and just felt free.

How did you come up with your name?

My name is Brandon. B major is a scale in music. My grandmother who passed, her name was Edna Mae, so I spell my name Maejor. That was in remembrance of her.

How did you get started in the game?

I was about 17 or 18 and I got hooked up with Trey Songz, this was his first album before anybody really knew who he was. We did some songs and next thing you know, it was on his album. It started off around the same time.

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

I take inspiration from everything. But growing up, my inspiration was Bob Marley. My mom is from Jamaica, so Bob Marley was big. Reggae music in general. And old school like Anita Baker, Stevie Wonder, all of that style your mom used to listen to.  My mom used to say, ‘Nah, you can’t listen to rap’ when I was a little kid. So growing up, I didn’t have that much influence until I got old enough to start sneaking it. The first tape I bought was Bone Thugs. Them n*ggas was raw.

If you could collaborate with anybody, who would it be?

Elvis. Elvis was a star. One of the people I actually got to work with was Andre 3000. That was one of my dream collaborations. I would like to work with Anita Baker or someone like that. And Andre, who I got a chance to work with already, that was cool. Amazing actually.

Are you a big partier?

A big partier in moderation.

What’s your favorite liquor to drink, since you’re about that life?

Lately I’ve been drinking this thing called the French Connection. You can Google that.

What’s your favorite thing to do besides making music?

I love making music, so much it’s hard. But lately I’ve been reading books.

What’s your favorite book?

I don’t have a favorite, but the last book I read that was pretty good is called The Black Swan. It’s not about the movie with the ballerina. It’s about humans and probabilities. It’s a cool and weird book. But it definitely makes you think differently.

What’s your favorite color?

Skin. Nude.

What’s your favorite thing to eat?

I don’t know. I don’t have that.

Do you eat?

I try. Right now, I got cheese, eggs, turkey bacon and orange juice.

If you could be abducted by any hot celebrity female, who would you want to be abducted by?

Oprah. You got that hook up? If you could find Oprah and Miley Cyrus, that’s my top two. [Laughs]

Is Oprah your celebrity crush?

Yeah, Oprah and the wife from The Cosby Show, Phylicia Rashad.

What’s been the craziest thing to happen to you so far on tour?

The craziest thing that happened was a couple of days ago. I was in a hood club and it was so hood. I saw two dudes and they were in a gang. And one dude grabbed the other dude by his waist and lifted him up. Just high enough so he could throw up gangs signs at me. It was in the middle while I was on stage. This dude lifted his boy up so he could throw up his gang signs and start reppin’ his set. Whoa man. I couldn’t believe it. It was like baby Simba. He was throwing up sets. It was crazy.

If you could only bring three albums to a deserted island, what would they be?

R. Kelly 12 Play, 2Pac Makaveli, and maybe the Coldplay album that had “Clocks” on it.

Can you tell me something that most people don’t know about you?

Well, I pray at night. I really pray to give thanks. I’m just thankful of all the positive things going on in my life.

You have your mixtape Maejor Maejor, but when can we expect an album?

I’m working on the album. It’s going come out sometime next year. We’re really going in with the label and everybody getting enough time. But I really want to make sure it’s perfect. So I’m not rushing.

What three wishes would you ask for?

I would wish for positive things for people, like kids who want to accomplish stuff that they feel is out of their means, I would like for them to have that positive attitude and know that they could get it, and for people to stop hating on other people. Not even on me, that’s cool. I just feel that a lot of people are just haters. I don’t know if it’s all cultures, I don’t know if it’s American, I don’t know. But what happened to giving people their props? People always like to be too cool and hate on people. I just want people to have fun and just enjoy life. I would wish for that. Just make everyone positive.

Is there anything you want to say to your fans?

If there anybody who’s supported anything I’ve done in anyway, even if you just downloaded it and gave it to a friend, I genuinely appreciate that. Everybody, believe you can do it.
