Congresswoman Gabbrielle Giffords celebrated part of her Thanksgiving at a military base in her hometown Tucson, Arizona.
This was the first time Giffords, who was shot in the head in January by Jared Lee Loughner, made a public appearance to her constiuents.
Giffords still suffers from physical damage due to the shooting as she was only able to serve food with her left hand.
The amount of words she used in exchanges she had with people at the event was also limited due to brain damage. She was able to tell Airmen 1st Class Millie Gray happy holiday and thanked him for his service.
Gray spoke on Gifford’s appearance saying:
“It just feels really good to see that she is out here supporting the troops, and just continuing to be an inspiration and a strong role model for Americans in general. I felt very proud and very humble… She was very warm, asked how our meal was, which, of course, was amazing.”
Her rehabilitation has limited her from being in her district greatly. Directors of the military base initially requested that just a staff member from Gifford’s office attend the event, but Giffords decided that she wanted to go herself when it was brought to her attention.
Congresswoman Giffords is currently in rehabilitation in Houston at the TIRR Memorial Hermann. We wish her the best!
