Los Angeles Police covered in riot gear stormed an Occupy L.A. encampment under darkness Wednesday night, to arrest and drive out many of the peaceful protesters who have occupied L.A.’s City Hall from day one.

Dozens of officers in riot gear flooded down the steps of Los Angeles City Hall just after midnight and started dismantling the two-month-old camp, two days after a deadline passed for campers to leave the park.

STORY: Occupy L.A. Gets Eviction Notice! 

At least 1,400 police officers in helmets, wielding batons and guns with rubber bullets converged on the park from all directions and began making arrests after several orders were given to leave.

While on the north and west sides of City Hall, police were busy loading demonstrators onto buses headed for jail. 

Police arrested more than 200 protesters who defied orders to leave.
