Martina Davis Correia, 44, the older sister of executed death row inmate Troy Davis, lost her battle with cancer and passed away Thursday evening.

STORY: He Has A Name: Troy Davis Executed At 11:08 PM EST

Correia was at her brother’s side until the end.

Troy Davis maintained his innocence in the death of off-duty Savannah police officer Mark Allen MacPhail in 1989 when he was shot three times in a parking lot in Georgia.

Ledra Sullivan-Russell, a close family friend, said Thursday night:

“I’ve thought for a long time that Martina’s fight for Troy is what kept her alive, and she must have been very tired. She was the most extraordinary woman I’ve ever known.”

Correia is survived by her 17-year-old son, Antone De’Juan Davis Correia; brother Lester Davis; and sisters Kimberly and Ebony Davis.

This year, the Davis family also lost their mother, Virginia Davis, who died in April. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Davis family as they cope with their loss.
