Karl Lagerfeld never ceases to amaze and the Pre-Fall 2012 Chanel runway show is a testament to that.

The theme, “Paris-Bombay” was a reminder that Europe’s fashion industry has increasingly turned to India to produce extravagantly handworked pieces since it’s become more and more expensive to make them at home.

Lagerfeld’s plan was to flip the equation, so that everything that looked intricately Indian was actually made by Chanel’s ateliers in Paris.

The show featured many models of color, especially of South Asian descent, clotted silver embroideries, gilded laces, lustrous silks and provoked a genuine feeling of having its root in India. Some of the models even had their hair dread-locked.

Even though the theme was obviously based on India, Karl Lagerfeld admits that he has never been to India. “It’s much more inspiring not to go to places than to go,” he said today after the show.

The decor included towering tiers of fruits, sweets, and flowers that filled the center of the room, but the main attraction was obviously the clothes.
