Netflix saw its profits take a beating this year after it announced an increase in subscription fees. That move cost the DVD rental and streaming movie company customers as well as dollars.

Things may be on the come up, however as Netflix is in talks with Facebook US, and Congress, to let customers share their viewing habits via the social media site. This feature is already in place for International users of Netlix.

So why did it take so long to reach our shores? It’s against the law.

Back in 1988, Congress passed a law restricting the publication of US citizens movie viewing habits after Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork’s VHS (yes VHS) video rentals became public. The result? Bork didn’t get the job.

Reports HuffPo:

This week, the House passed legislation that would allow a merchant to share viewing records with a customer’s consent. Most importantly to Netflix, the authorization can be made online.

The House approved the bill 303-116. It still needs the backing of the U.S. Senate to become law.

It has a long way to go, so don’t worry about being judged on Facebook just yet.
