The highest court in the land has decided to step in and join the divisive fight over Arizona’s controversial immigration law.

STORY: Judge Blocks Arizona Immigration Law

The Supreme Court is stepping in to challenge the law that gives local police the right to question a person’s immigration status if the officer suspects he is in the country illegally.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed the Arizona immigration measure into law in April 2010, which has spawned many other states to enact similar laws, most notably Alabama, South Carolina and Utah.

The court will review a federal appeals court ruling that blocked several provisions in the Arizona law, one of which gives authorities the power to question the status of undocumented workers.

The Obama administration challenged the Arizona law by arguing that regulating immigration is the job of the federal government, not states.

When news broke of the Supreme Court Gov. Brewer said:

“This case is not just about Arizona. It’s about every state grappling with the costs of illegal immigration.”

Immigration is sure to be a hot button issue in 2012, hopefully the court makes the right decision now and strikes down the controversial law.
