According to Tuoitrenews, experienced American Dr. McKay McKinnon led the successful operation which lasted about 11 hours.
In 1997, doctors attempted to remove Nguyen’s tumor and failed, which resulted in an amputation below his right knee. The chance of success this time around was at a low of 50 percent, but for Nguyen there was still reason to hope. Nguyen expressed his feelings before the operation saying:
“It’s common for people to fear death, and I’m no exception… But when I heard that Dr. McKinnon had decided to come back to Vietnam one more time to give me a new life, I became more hopeful.”
The tumor is said to be the largest tumor in Vietnam’s history. Right now, Nguyen is recovering and should regain consciousness by tomorrow morning.
Much credit is due to Dr. McKinnon for this operation. Our wishes go towards Nguyen’s successful recovery!
