Aren’t we far past this?

In a Cincinnati, Ohio apartment complex, landlord Jamie Hein shockingly posted a sign that read “Public Swimming Pool. Whites Only.”

The sign forced Michael Gunn, who is black and lived in the complex, to find a new residence for his family.

According to ABC News, the sign was posted in May of 2011 by Jamie, who said she was trying to “protect her assets” from the family’s hair products that “clouded” the pool.

Michael spoke on the incident saying:

My initial reaction to seeing the sign was of shock, disgust and outrage; he also said he had to relocate in order to avoid subjecting their family to further humiliating treatment.

Justice seems to have showed itself for the Gunn family. Ohio’s Civil Rights Commission, in a 4-0 decision, agreed that the sign was unacceptable, citing it “restricts the social interaction between Caucasians and African-Americans and reinforces discriminatory actions aimed at oppressing people of color.”

This decision was upheld Thursday by an Ohio civil rights panel.

We are glad the Gunn family has received immediate justice.

Incidents like this should not repeat itself in this country.
