Your parents always warned you to be wary of what you post on your Facebook page.

An Indonesian man could be facing a 5-year jail sentence for denying the existence of God on Facebook.

31-year-old Alexander Aan wrote on a Facebook page “God does not exist,” before he continued on to say “If God exists, why do bad things happen? There should only be good things if God is merciful.”

Looks like the streets were watching because after Alexander posted the comment, a mob attacked him on his way to work and police promptly arrested him on charges of blasphemy.

According to the police chief of Dharmasraya, Alexander, who is a civil servant, apparently lied on his job application and said he was a Muslim. Indonesia has an infamously low tolerance for non-believers of the five religions that the government recognizes.

The incident may sound unreal from the land of Zuckerberg’s creation, but Atheism is illegal in Indonesia and this non-believer could do some real time because he voiced his beliefs.
