Once again Rick Santorum has firmly placed his foot in his mouth, this time attacking President Obama and his faith.

STORY: Gays, Abortion & Birth Control! Lessons From Rick Santorum

On Saturday, while addressing a crowd in Ohio, Santorum said that Obama’s agenda is based on “some phony theology, not a theology based on the Bible.”

Quickly changing his tune, Santorum then told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that he wasn’t criticizing the President’s Christianity, instead:

“I’ve repeatedly said I don’t question the president’s faith. I’ve repeatedly said that I believe the president’s Christian. I am talking about his world view, and the way he approaches problems in this country. I think they’re different than how most people do in America.”

The White House fired back at Santorum as Presidential adviser Robert Gibbs told ABC’s “This Week” that it’s time “to get rid of this mindset in our politics that, if we disagree, we have to question character and faith.”

Gibbs says the country would be better served if presidential candidates focused instead on the economic challenges faced by the middle class.

Gibbs’ forceful rebuke suggests Obama’s campaign is taking Santorum more seriously these days as a potential general election challenger.

As for Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator said Obama’s environmental policies are ideas of born out of the “radical environmentalists,” who, Santorum argues, oppose greater use of the country’s natural resources because they believe “man is here to serve the Earth.”

Santorum is the reason why it’s written to be a separation of Church and State, but over the years that sentiment has became vastly blurred.
