Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan, 78, spoke before his congregation at the United Center in Chicago over the weekend as part of the group’s annual Saviours’ Day convention.

His speech “What Will 2012 Bring to America, the World and Black and Oppressed People” touched on everything from President Obama, to the Republicans and Israel. But what has many talking today is Farrakhan’s assumption that those who oppose Obama are plotting his assassination.

During his impassioned speech on Sunday, Farrakhan believed that racism in America has created such a negative political climate that it could lead to assassination attempts on President Obama.

Decrying what he called “the synagogue of Satan,” Farrakhan asked his followers: “Do you think they’re wicked enough to be plotting our brother’s assassination as we speak?”

Farrakhan suggested an assassination attempt against the President could involve a ‘patsy’ who would shoulder the blame for a larger conspiracy.

“I believe they want a Muslim to kill President Obama,” Farrakhan told his congregation.

Using photos and slides, Farrakhan spent almost an hour illustrating disparaging comments about Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama made by current GOP presidential contenders and city leaders nationwide, along with caricatures drawn in other countries depicting Obama as Hitler.

Farrakhan said that there are people who don’t like having a black man in the White House explaining:

“They have called President Barack Obama a racist, an anti-Semite, a socialist, a communist, a foreigner, an alien and some have even called him a terrorist. Obama has really got them upset. Republicans are looking for some white person. Anybody. Anybody.”

Farrakhan also joked saying:

“They’ve said over and over that he is Muslim when he’s Christian. Well, President, you might as well come and join us. Then we’ll get something done.”

Farrakhan also touched on claims that the World Trade Center attacks were not the result of a terrorist attack but an invention of the American government; he said they were lies to advance some people over others.

What do you think of Farrakhan’s claims?
