The leading lady on the CW’s hit show Gossip Girl graces the cover of Marie Claire and in it, shares her harrowing rags-to-riches story.

In the April issue of the mag, we learn that the 26-year-old didn’t always have it all, that her past wasn’t an easy one due to her parents’ troubled history, which included drug dealing and jail stints. She talks candidly about her mother, who gave birth to her while serving federal prison time for drug trafficking and clears up the rumor that she was not born in an actual jail cell but delivered in a hospital, then transferred to a halfway house.

Leighton lived with her grandmother until her mother’s release. And her father also served time for drug-related offenses. Now that’s whoa!

“My family has a crazy history. Probably the craziest I’ve heard of. I look back now and I see it in a nice light. It wasn’t uncomplicated. But I played outside. I went to the beach. There were happy, fun times.”

Aside from opening up about the financial struggles she and her family overcame, Leighton also admits that she may never take the walk down the aisle that most women dream about:

“I never had a boyfriend until I was 18. It’s nice, I guess – when you like them. But it isn’t the most important thing. I’m not sure I ever want to get married. The only time a relationship is good is when you really love them. I don’t want to hang out with some guy I just like. I’m not sure I ever want to get married.”

Well, if she continues to produce beautiful photo shoots like the one featured in the April issue of Marie Claire, she’ll have a hard time warding off potential husbands!
