City Manager Bonaparte said the city owes “a great deal of appreciation” to those who participated in the rally and city commission meeting Monday.

“Thank you for conducting yourself in such a wonderful manner,” he said, adding that he is aware residents have felt in the past that their concerns, especially regarding the Sanford Police Department, have not been considered by city officials.

“I am now in the process of talking to the Department of Justice in instituting a mechanism whereby citizens…can have their concerns heard by an independent agency,” Bonaparte said.

Acting Police Scott acknowledged that the police department has “faced some challenges in the past few years,” but maintained his priority is to “restore the trust and confidence of the people and the nation in this law enforcement agency.”

The press conference comes a day after new details surfaced of the shooting investigation, including details about statements the shooter, George Zimmerman, gave to police following Trayvon’s shooting death on Feb. 26.
