Sanford, and the state of Florida in general, is now center stage when the national conversation turns to gun laws.

STORY: Congressional Black Caucus Reveals Resolution In Honor Of Trayvon!

According to the Orlando Sentinel, George Zimmerman was one of 1,903 residents in his Sanford ZIP code with permits to carry concealed handguns, state records show.

Numbers like that would be considered very high, but Sanford doesn’t rank in Central Florida’s top 10 ZIP codes with the most concealed-weapons-permit holders.

In Sanford, the figures translate to roughly 6 percent of adults 21 and older who carry concealed weapons.

Taking guns to work, church and play in Florida has become so widespread in the past 25 years that the state likely leads the U.S. in the number of residents legally carrying guns.

With nearly 920,000 active concealed-weapons permits, the Sunshine State is home to almost as many gun dealers as its 2,300 citrus farms, according to state and federal records.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, who monitors gun laws and activity, cites Trayvon’s death as reason to oppose a nationwide effort under way to let concealed-weapons-permit holders carry their handguns in all 50 states.

As of now, Floridians can travel armed in 32 other states.

Here’s the kicker when it comes to guns in Florida, under their concealed-weapons-permit law, residents don’t have to explain why they want to carry a gun or demonstrate they can hit a target to receive a permit.

Here’s how you can get a gun in Florida:

Applicants must first pass a criminal-background check and a class lasting up to four hours on self-defense law, safe gun handling and marksmanship.

But training had become so lax in recent years that some classes were taught with toy pistols until the National Rifle Association threatened to pull the instructors’ credentials in 2008 if they didn’t use real guns and bullets.

In Florida about one in 17 adults 21 and older has concealed-weapons permits.

The fact of the matter remains that we continue to live in a gun minded culture in our nation and Trayvon Martin was a victim of that culture.

On February 26th, 17-year-old Trayvon was shot and killed by neighborhood watchman, 28-year-old George Zimmerman. Trayvon was returning from a local 7-Eleven after buying a bag of Skittles and iced tea.

He was then spotted by Zimmerman while returning to his father’s girlfriend’s home inside their gated community. Zimmerman called 911, explaining that Trayvon, who was wearing a hoodie at the time, a pair of blue jeans, and red/white sneakers, looked suspicious.

Zimmerman pursued Trayvon even after he was told not to by the 911 dispatcher.

When Zimmerman approached Trayvon, the two got into a scuffle, resulting in Trayvon taking a bullet to the chest at point blank range.

Zimmerman claimed that he shot Trayvon on grounds of self-defense, although Trayvon was unarmed.

Since the murder of Trayvon, the entire nation has expressed outrage.

George Zimmerman has not been arrested yet, as more evidence comes forward proving that his claims of self-defense were false.
