After coming forward to admit to a murder that was dormant for almost 20 years, rapper G. Dep was aiming to have a comeback in his career. Those dreams were shut down by the realization that he could possibly be serving 25 years for murder that took place 17 years ago.

G. Dep shot a stranger after the stranger attempted to rob him on the street. The rapper admitted to the murder in a confession he called a relief, and refused a bargain that was offering him a 15-year sentence.
Now 37 and married with children, Dep is facing the possibility of 25 years even though the victim John Henkel’s own family has criticized the rapper’s decision to come forward, saying it needlessly stoked the relatives’ pain.

Henkel, 32, who was married and had three children, was shot in the chest three times outside a Harlem apartment complex around 1 a.m. on Oct. 19, 1993. The case remained unsolved until G.Dep came forward with his confession.
“Conscience drove him to do something. … He thinks he did the right thing,” defense lawyer Anthony L. Ricco said after a hearing this winter.
“There’s a lot of people who think he’s a fool for doing this. He doesn’t think he’s a fool,” Ricco said. “He says this has been like a blessing. It’s saved his life.”
G. Dep suffered with a longstanding addiction to the hallucinogenic drug PCP and his lawyer suggested that he would question whether years of PCP use factored in the admission.
