George Zimmerman was released from jail last night just after midnight. He was released from John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Sanford, Florida wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers jacket, as Judge Kenneth Lester set his bail at $150,000 this past Friday.

After leaving prison a free man, for now, Zimmerman is expected back in court in less than a month.

CNN reports:

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said Zimmerman had been fitted with a GPS monitoring device allowing authorities to track his location [before being released].

He is next scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment — a formal reading of charges against him — on May 8, according to documents released by the court on Monday. His arraignment had previously been scheduled for May 29.

According to CNN: On the same day as George Zimmerman’s release on bail, Sanford, Florida police chief Bill Lee is resigning.

After being temporarily suspended last month, he has decided to step down.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Sanford city manager says Sanford “has experienced great turmoil” and “we are hoping to stabilize… and continue with this time of healing,” after the resignation of Bill Lee.

The Sanford city commission rejected the resignation of the police chief harshly criticized for his handling of the Trayvon Martin case.

The commissioners voted 3-2 Monday to reject the resignation of Bill Lee. The majority blamed the uproar surrounding Martin’s death on outsiders.

Sanford’s Mayor Jeff Triplett and 2 commissioners voted the chief’s resignation. Mayor was for earlier “no confidence” vote.
