Richard Grenell, the recently appointed national security spokesman for the Mitt Romney campaign, has abruptly resigned from his position due to issues surrounding his homosexuality.

The Washington Post reported that Richard stepped down because of “a full-court press by anti-gay conservatives.” In a statement given to the Washington Post, Richard confirmed his resignation saying:

“I have decided to resign from the Romney campaign as the Foreign Policy and National Security Spokesman. While I welcomed the challenge to confront President Obama’s foreign policy failures and weak leadership on the world stage, my ability to speak clearly and forcefully on the issues has been greatly diminished by the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues that sometimes comes from a presidential campaign. I want to thank Governor Romney for his belief in me and my abilities and his clear message to me that being openly gay was a non-issue for him and his team.”
Richard is no stranger to controversy. The Huffington Post reported days after joining the Romney campaign that Richard made some extremely sexist statements towards prominent women in the media, eventually deleting 800 tweets from his Twitter page. Irwin Arieff of Reuters also reported to the Huffington Post that Richard “often lied” and that he was the “most dishonest and deceptive press person.”
Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades released a statement regarding the matter, which read:
“We are disappointed that Ric decided to resign from the campaign for his own personal reasons. We wanted him to stay because he had superior qualifications for the position he was hired to fill.”
The Obama campaign certainly expressed their disapproval of the reasons surrounding the resignation, releasing a statement on Twitter saying: “Today we learned that in the year 2012, a Republican nominee for President can’t have a gay person as spokesman.”
We’re sure this is something the Romney campaign does not want surrounding their campaign.
