The young and the young at heart lost a great author and illustrator last week. Maurice Sendak, author of Where The Wild Things Are, passed away at the age of 83. The 1963 children’s book is one of the most well known books all over the world; so much so, that a movie rendition of the tale was made by Spike Jonze in 2009.

To show their appreciation for the legacy of Sendak, seven artists each submitted artistic renditions of pictures that remind them of Maurice and the experiences they have either had with him or because of him to the New York Times. Included in the list of artist are Geoff McFetridge, Art Spiegelman and Marc Rosenthal.

The whimsical pictures are reminiscent of Maurice’s Where The Wild Things Are illustrations, but are also accompanied by each artist telling why Maurice meant so much to them.
