It’s been nearly seven years since we first saw a 16-year-old Chris Brown appear on the music scene with his self-titled debut album. We have literally watched Brown grow into what we see now: which is probably the most consistent and charismatic force we have in R&B music.

Tomorrow that force officially releases his fifth studio album, Fortune.

The album is strong. So strong in fact, that it might surpass Chris Brown’s last offering, the hugely popular F.A.M.E. LP he dropped last year.

What makes Fortune work so well is how Brown merges the assortment of sounds on the album. Chris Brown experiments with everything from dubstep to hip-hop, and it all comes off organically. There’s good ebb and flow throughout Fortune.

The album can be split up into three sections: Fortune gets off with an energetic start with the club-ready, dance songs like “Turn Up The Music” and the defiant “Bassline.”

Once you get to the middle of the album, things start going into a more mid-tempo ride. This includes the sultry “Sweet Love” the brutally honest “Don’t Judge Me” and the retrospective “4 Years Old,” which is probably the highlight of the album.

On “4 Years Old,” the singer gives a picture-perfect image of being younger and dreaming big:

“Feels like I’m 4-years-old all over again, cause I’m just running fast, should be walking. Saying when I grow up, you gonna see. I’m gonna be comfortable and happy.”

The album comes full circle, ending on a high-energy note with two dubstep-influenced tracks, “Don’t Wake Me Up” and “Trumpet Lights.”

For the most part, Breezy holds down the fort himself, singing 90 percent of the verses and hooks. There are a couple of exceptions: Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean swag it out on the album’s second single, “Till I Die,” the legendary Nas shows love with a killer-16 on “Mirage” and Chris’ BFF, Kevin McCall, spits a proactive verse on “Strip.”

But for the most part, this album is Chris Brown’s album, and he holds it down. If you’re a Breezy fan or a fan of good music in general, show Fortune some love, because this is another notch on the boy’s belt.

And don’t forget about the deluxe version of the album, which includes five more songs.
