The scientific community is elated after the 40 year search for the Higgs- boson, commonly referred to as the god particle, finally concluded yesterday. But many of us not familiar with Peter Higgs or his work may be a bit confused as to why.

STORY: Holy Sh*t! The God Particle Exists

Well, you know the stories about Jesus turning water into wine, Moses turning a river into blood with a staff, and Moses parting the Red Sea. This particle gives scientists no further insight into how that would’ve happened.

What it has done is give credence to the theory of the standard model, the theoretical model that describes just about everything observed so far in the world of particle physics.

It has been observed that different particles are responsible for giving matter different properties. One of the most mysterious and important properties is mass. The Higgs-boson, or “God particle,” is the particle which gives mass to matter. Until July 4th, that was only a theory. This discovery is a major milestone in understanding particle physics.

This may sound like an intellectual wet dream, but many of you are still wondering what’s so special about the discovery and how does it relate to your life. Take a look…

The Big Bang!

It is theorized that the particle, or a particle extremely similar to the Higgs boson, is the fuse that ignited the Big Bang. So now scientists are able to observe what would’ve been the instant of creation, and it allows them to observe the universe before the Big Bang.

Parallel Universes

Imagine the Universe as a giant bubble, or an infinitesimal one. If the Higgs boson ignited one to create this Universe, it is possible that there are other universes that have been or have yet to be created. So all that talk of parallel universes may not be as out there as you once believed.

Time Travel

Another reason this discovery is so monumental deals with time travel. With the discovery of the Higgs boson, it is theorized that time travel is not only possible, but may be within our reach.

The theory hinges on a subatomic particle called the Higgs singlet, a particle related to the Higgs boson.

Physicists Professor Thomas Weiler and graduate fellow Chui Man Ho believe the Higgs singlet may be able to jump through space and time, travel through a hidden dimension, and then re-enter our dimension forwards or backwards in time.

“Because time travel is limited to these special particles, it is not possible for a man to travel back in time and murder one of his parents before he himself is born, for example” Wheller said, “However, if scientists could control the production of Higgs singlets, they might be able to send messages to the past or future.”

It’s important to note that the Higgs singlet has yet to be discovered, but due to its theorized relation to the Higgs boson, if it does exist we are not too far from discovering it.

Religon Vs. Science

This discovery has the potential to answer many of life’s great unanswered questions.

Not to disparage anyone’s religious beliefs, if you feel God created the world in seven days that’s cool, but science is the answer to how, not the answer to why. For all you or I know, both religion and science can be correct when it comes to matters of creation.
