Last night D’Angelo made his return to the stage at the Essence Music Festival.

The “Brown Sugar” singer took the stage to the loud roar of the jammed packed Mercedes Benz Superdome audience. While many people were waiting to see D’Angelo’s return, they quickly realized the man did not lose his voice.

His smooth vocals filled the arena, but it didn’t move people. Many people enjoyed his performance, but the arena sat in their seats like the principle was explaining the new Fire Drill procedure.

STORY: D’Angelo To Perform At 2012 BET Awards

While D’Angelo put on a great performance, many people just weren’t familiar with the songs he was singing. While his new music is cool, he would of reaped the benefits of mixing up his well known hits earlier in the performance rather than starting with album fillers and new joints that the radio hasn’t embraced yet.

Prior to D’Angelo’s return Keyshia Cole and Trey Songz put on amazing sets. Keyshia had the crowd rocking and grooving as she went through her long catalog of hits.

Gears quickly changed when Trey Songz took the stage as the women in the crowd filled up the SuperDome with screams, moans and sounds of lust as they sang along with Trey and were treated with the first ever performance of his new song “Dive In.”

Overall, the first official night of the festival was a huge success as hundreds of thousands of people flowed in and out of the convention center to the Superdome for the concert.

Earlier in the day, big brands like Coors, Walmart, McDonalds, Ford, and Verizon gave back to the urban community. Ford gave away cars and all sorts of charitable donations.

Coca-Cola also provided monetary donations to the hurricane ravaged community helping to fund numerous outreach programs like Girl Up Nola and other programs that help the youth get fit and live healthy lives.

It was a tremendous way to kick off the festival.

The most fun might of been had by the festival-goers who showed up for the ultimate My Black is Beautiful Experience from MBIB and its supporting brands, CoverGirl. Queen Collection, Pantene® Relaxed & Natural, Olay, Oral-B ®and Crest®, Gain®, Charmin® and Bounty.

MBIB also sponsored a Dinner with Bevy that was amazing, lots of fun indeed.
