In an official statement from the White House, Obama said:

“Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado.”

The gunman, who is now in custody, stood at the entrance of the theater and began to shoot randomly into the crowd at about 12:30 a.m. at a multiplex theater in a mall in Aurora, which is just 25 miles from Columbine.

Officials did not release the suspect’s name, but he was taken into custody. There is no evidence of any other attackers and no immediate motive.

According to multiple news sources, the suspect spoke of “possible explosives” in his residence.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said 10 victims died at the theater and four at area hospitals.

Two people in critical condition were rushed to nearby Swedish Medical Center, spokeswoman Nicole Williams said.

She said emergency crews told her staff to prepare for several more patients from the shooting scene.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Aurora.
