Since the beginning of time, the Olympics have always been a battle. But what started out for a battle for gold has turned into so much more.

Cue in the Games of the 30th Olympiad, and so far for Black Americans and specifically black Twitter, it has been a battle of black crabs fighting in a barrel. It’s become a light-skinned, dark-skinned war and it’s not cute.

Coming off the debate over Gabby Douglas and her hair, we now have Lolo Jones getting laughed at by Dawn Harper and Kellie Wells, after they admitted to being hurt by Lolo’s media attention.

Then, Dawn threw a not-so-subtle shot.

“Because their favorite didn’t win all of sudden it’s just like, ‘Were going to push your story aside and still going to push this one,’” Harper continued. “That hurt. It did. It hurt my feelings.”

The host asked the women if they’ve “moved on” from any awkwardness surrounding Jones in 2012. They responded:

“On the podium tonight, the three girls that earned their spot and they got their medals and they worked hard and did what they needed to do, prevailed,” said Wells, 30. “And that’s all that really needs to be said.”

“Boom! Just like that,” Harper added.

We don’t need that! I’m not saying that Dawn Harper only feels that way because she’s darker, but based on the past, one can’t help but think Dawn’s dark skin has something to do with it. Her story is amazing, and winning gold on borrowed shoes is impressive, but this is America and it has an image, right?

While I believe that real champions shouldn’t kick their opponents while they’re down, I do feel for Dawn and Kellie. Their story will never be as compelling as Lolo Jones’. America is shallow, and it would much rather hear about the story from the girl who looks more like the President of the United States, rather then the story from someone who looks like the help.

I can’t help but think that this is Spike Lee’s whole School Daze “Wannabes vs. the Jiggaboos” battle all over again.

These events are causing an argument on the level of Leeds and Dap, when Samuel L. Jackson says:

Y’all niggers, and you gonna be niggers forever… just like us. Niggers.”

This is my plea as Dap to tell the world, “You’re not niggas.”

We must stop the in-fighting, not as black, not as mixed raced, but as American and as humans. We are fighting over the dumbest things. Fighting over people making opinions about someone’s hair. Fighting over who won a race and whose story people choose to want to know.

The bottom line is, all this banter does nothing but make us crabs in a barrel, pulling each other down instead of allowing each other the opportunity to be great.
