It’s been two months since homeless drifter Ronald Poppo, 65, had his face chewed off on the Miami Causeway over Memorial Day weekend by Rudy Eugene. The bizarre attack prompted everyone to dub Eugene, who was said to be under the influence of balt salts, the Miami Zombie.

According to CBS Miami, Poppo gave a recorded interview on July 19th to Miami homicide detectives, in which he explains what happened the day he was attacked.

Poppo told detectives:

“He attacked me…He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically that’s all there is to say about it.”

As for why he was attacked, Poppo said he still can’t figure out why Eugene assaulted him:

“For a very short amount of time I thought he was a good guy…But he just went and turned berserk. He apparently didn’t have a good day at the Beach and he – he was coming back. And I guess he took it out, took it out on me or something. I don’t know.”

Poppo was left blind after the attack and had to undergo several surgeries at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was transferred to the Perdue Medical Center, Jackson’s long-term care facility located in South Miami-Dade.

Poppo has been undergoing occupational therapy to deal with the pain and suffering, although doctors say that he seems relatively resigned to what happened to him.

Poppo may be resigned with what happened, but we’re sure it was a day he won’t soon forget. We wish him continued success during his recovery.
