Hip-hop originated in New York City. Apparently that doesn’t mean sh*t to Lil Wayne, because the rapper, who has made a lot of money off hip-hop, does not like New York City.

He said so on Monday when MTV caught up with the rapper in Las Vegas, while he was introducing his new line of sneakers with Supra. 

Wayne was asked about his recent appearance at Nicki Minaj’s free New York show, and even though he was happy to show love to Nicki, the rapper had little love for the Rotten Apple, saying: “Flat out: I don’t like New York.”

Now, there are some who have taken offense to this statement — Queens State Senator Malcolm Smith wants an apology from the rapper — however, Wayne has had a tricky past with New York City.

It’s a past so tricky that we can understand why Wayne would hate the Empire State.

Drama with Hot 97.

For whatever reason, Lil Wayne has had a salty relationship with New York City’s number one radio station, Hot 97. Back in 2005, when Lil Wayne released Tha Carter II, Wayne put in the booklet “f*ck Hot 97.” From there, various little shots by Hot 97 DJs like Kay Slay only helped hurt any kind of relationship between the two entities.  

Lil Wayne gets locked up right after his first headlining show in New York City. 

On July 23, 2007, Wayne headlined his first NYC show at the Beacon Theatre. It actually ended up being an epic night, with surprise appearances from Kanye West, Juelz Santana and Baby. However, things turned sour when, after the show was over, he was arrested when cops found weed and a gun on the bus.  

Lil Wayne cancels three shows in a row, then gets sued for it.

In 2009, Lil Wayne canceled three shows in Rochester, NY, for various reasons, ranging from sound issues to “logistics of the band.” The promoter of the three shows, who claims he fronted Wayne 100 stacks, sued the rapper for $1.3 million for his actions. 

Lil Wayne spends most of 2010 on Rikers Island. 

After the gun situation we talked about earlier, Wayne gets sentenced to eight months in the infamous New York prison, Rikers Island.  

Wayne disses former NY Knick Jeremy Lin.

Lil Wayne was no fan of NY Knick sensation Jeremy Lin. In a video he posted, Tunechi says: “Now, everyone got the Lin fever and everybody doing the Lin — I don’t, I’m trying to figure out what I call him. Well, he beat my Lakers. So ever since that game, I hate him. So I call him Lin Laden. Yeah, that’s what I call him. Lin Laden. Trend that.” 

Lil Wayne pulls Nicki Minaj and the entire YMCMB crew from Summer Jam.

During Hot 97’s 2012 Summer Jam, Nicki Minaj threw a fit when radio personality Peter Rosenberg said some unpleasant things about Nicki during the concert’s preshow. This led to Wayne pulling Nicki and any other YMCMB artist off of the bill.
