Talk about a royal scandal!

French magazine, Closer, just published a number of photos of Kate Middleton sunbathing topless while staying at the French chateau of the Queen’s nephew, Lord Linley.

Closer‘s site captions the story of the couple:

“like you have never seen them before. Gone are the fixed smiles and the demure dresses. On holiday Kate forgets everything.”

The photographer who shot the pics tried to sell them to British media, but as good citizens of the UK, most media outlets like to avoid embarrassing the royals. Although the photos are blurry, Closer features four pages of pics of the couple, with Kate topless in several.

According to the BBC:

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge “have been hugely saddened to learn that a French publication and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner”, a spokesman for Clarence House, the Prince of Wales’s office, said.

The incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to the duke and duchess for being so.

“Their Royal Highnesses had every expectation of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them.

“Officials acting on behalf of their Royal Highnesses are consulting with lawyers to consider what options may be available to the duke and duchess.”

If these photos are indeed of the royal couple, it would be a major invasion of privacy, but, of course, we must say they do look good. The royal couple is currently touring Southeast Asia.
