UPDATE: Sunday, September 30th, 1:25PM EST

BET has released a statement:

Tonight during a taping of the BET Hip Hop Awards 2012 (not the BET Awards which went down without incident two months ago) an altercation between two rap entourages broke out backstage. Atlanta police and BET security quickly defused the altercation.

According to the Associated Press, police spokesman Carlos Campos said officers responded to the scuffle at around 7:30 p.m. EST Campos says there were no shots fired.

More drama unfolded as two men were involved in a fistfight in the parking lot of the venue.

BET Networks works very hard to bring the best in entertainment to the city of Atlanta. For the past 7 years BET has celebrated the true art form of Hip Hop. Due to some misjudgment of select attendees, it is unfortunate that certain incidents took place. BET Networks does not condone any type of violence. Local authorities are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”

Despite the actions of a few the 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards embodied the true spirit of hip hop and was not impacted at all by any incidents. Tune in on Tuesday, October 9, 8P/7C to watch the 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards.

The Atlanta Police Department has released a statement:

“Shortly after 7:15 pm Saturday, a fight broke out in the parking lot at the Atlanta Civic Center (where the BET Awards were being taped) between two groups. Atlanta Police Department officers on scene responded to break up the fight and used OC spray in the process. Individuals fled the scene. There were no arrests or reports of serious injuries. Reports of shots fired appear to be untrue.”

Multiple sources said they hear gunshots…either way, not a good night in ATL.

UPDATE: Saturday, September 29th, 10:35PM EST

MTV News is reporting that not only did Rick Ross get into it with Jeezy, but other members of Maybach Music Group tussled with members of 50 Cent’s G-Unit.

Multiple sources who witnessed the fray confirmed to MTV News that Ross’ protégé Gunplay was also involved in fisticuffs with members of 50 Cent’s G-Unit camp.

Gunplay was seen with visible wounds and a witness told us that the Miami MC was put into handcuffs and detained, but a separate source close to Gunplay told us that he was not arrested.

It seems that our homeboy MachineGun Kelly was also caught up in the middle of the ruckus, although we believe he wasn’t involed in any fighting.  He did tweet out:

We hope that everyone is ok, and that the beef ends as quickly as it started.

Also, DJ Drama jumped on the radio right after the awards to tell his first hand report of what he saw of the drama between Ricky Rozay and Snowman.  He caught the whole thing:

Rick Ross and Young Jeezy haven’t had a good relationship in the past, but over the recent years have buried their beef.

According to Funkmaster Flex, things came to a head when the rapper’s camps crossed paths backstage.

The fight moved from backstage to the parking lot, where gunshots were fired, prompting BET to shut down the awards ceremony momentarily.

Funkmaster Flex tweeted:

RapRadar’s Elliott Wilson began retweeting industry insider JasFly, who also confirmed Funkmaster Flex’s initial tweets:

No further details are confirmed, but we do know that whoever was shooting in the parking lot has been arrested and detained.

The BET Hip-Hop Awards have reopened the venue, but security is on high alert.
