The conservative blog website The Daily Caller and Fox News have rung the alarm over a supposedly secret video of a speech President Obama made using racist, fear mongering language. Tucker Carlson from The Daily Caller published the video and claims that it “contains racially-charged rhetoric.” The video leaked Tuesday evening and debuted on Fox News at 9PM EST.  However, the major problem with the “hidden” video is, for one, the video was not a secret and two, Obama is not using any racially derogatory language.

Gawker reports that the video has been on YouTube since 2007 and that conservatives actually made a fuss over it in 2008. It was filmed when then-Senator Obama addressed Hampton University in June, 2007.

Plus, the presence of racist rhetoric is frankly not there.  Conservatives argue that Obama is glorifying his former pastor Jeremiah Wright who they claim is a racist, but Obama basically just gives him a shout out:

“My pastor, the guy who puts up with me, counsels me, listens to my wife complain about me. He’s a friend and a great leader. Not just in Chicago, but all across the country.”

Obama then goes on to talk about the injustices that Hurricane Katrina victims suffered at the hands of FEMA and the federal government in what Fox News described as “racially” charged rhetoric. Because Katrina victims were abandoned, Obama noted that “the people down in New Orleans, they don’t care about as much.”  He then went on to say that we should invest in minority owned businesses and talked about helping the working class.

“We don’t need to build more highways out in the suburbs. We should be investing in minority-owned businesses, in our neighborhoods.”

[Poor people] “need help with basic skills, how to shop, how to show up for work on time, how to wear the right clothes, how to act appropriately in an office.”

Carlson says that Obama’s underlying theme in this speech to a predominantly Black audience was that white people don’t like you because you are Black while Fox News’ Sean Hannity called the above video “a glimpse in the mind of the real Barack Obama.”

You judge for yourself.
